Aksharabhyasam is a Sanskrit word meaning the initiation of education to a child by his parents and guru on an auspicious day by helping the child how to write alphabets on that day. Aksharam means imperishable, the one that never perishes. Whatever one acquires in terms of wealth, assets perishes in course of time, but not the wealth of education.
Before initiating Aksharabhyasam it is customary to pray to Goddess Saraswati , the Goddess of learning and knowledge with the shloka ‘ Saraswati Namasthubhyam Varade Kamarupini Vidyarambham karishyami Siddhirbhavathu Me Sada’ ( O Goddess Saraswati, Salutations to you the giver of boons , I shall begin my education ,may there always be accomplishment ).
As per the Puranas (ancient scriptures of Hinduism), one is bestowed with education & knowledge through the blessings of Goddess Saraswati. Performing Saraswati Pooja followed by Aksharabhyasam the child would acquire unhindered education and unbounded knowledge.
Aksharabhyasam starts with ONAMALU meaning the alphabets in Telugu.During Aksharabhyasam the child is helped to write the letters OM NAMAHA SHIVAYAHA SIDDHAM NAMAHA – salutations to Lord Shiva seeking his blessings for getting good education and attaining knowledge and wisdom.

విద్యాభ్యాసానికి ప్రారంభం - అక్షరాభ్యాసం ! అక్షరాలను దిద్దించడంతో విద్యాభ్యాసం ప్రారంభం అవుతుంది. "అక్షరం " అంటే క్షయము లేనిది నాశనం లేనిది అని అర్ధం. మనం సంపాదించే సంపదల్లో ఏదైనా నశిస్తుంది కానీ....అక్షర సంపద విద్యా సంపద మాత్రం నశించదు. అటువంటి అక్షరాభ్యాసాన్ని ప్రారంభించే ముందు సరస్వతీ నమస్తుభ్యం వరదే కామరూపిణి విద్యారంభం కరిష్యామి సిద్ధిర్భవతుమేసదా..." అని చదువుల తల్లి అయిన శ్రీ సరస్వతీ దేవిని ప్రార్ధించడం ఆచారం ! చదువుల తల్లి...అక్షరాల అధిదేవత, విద్యాధిదేవత, పుస్తకపాణిని, జ్ఞానప్రదాయిని విద్యలకు అధిదేవత అయిన శ్రీ సరస్వతీ దేవి కరుణ వుంటేనే విద్యాప్రాప్తి, ఙ్ఞానప్రాప్తి కలుగుతుంది అని పురాణ వచనం.అటువంటి సరస్వతి అమ్మవారి పూజచేసి పిల్లలకు అక్షరాభ్యాసం చెస్తే అపారమైన ఙ్ఞానం లభిస్తుంది ..నిరాటంకంగా విద్యాభివృద్ధి జరుగుతుంది అనే శాస్త్ర వచనం. అక్షరాల అభ్యాసం ఓనమాలతో ప్రారంభమౌతుంది. 'ఓనమాలు' అని ఎందుకన్నారంటే అక్షరాభ్యాసం చేయించేటప్పుడు 'ఓం నమః శివాయ సిద్ధం నమః' అని వ్రాయిస్తారు. ఐతే ఈ మధ్య దీన్నిమన పెద్దవాళ్ళకు తెలియదేమోననుకొని మార్పు చేసి 'ఓం నమః శివాయః' అని వ్రాస్తున్నారు. పెద్దవాళ్ళు అలా తెలియక చేయలేదు. ఓ న మః శి వా యః సిద్ధం నమః అనే అక్షరాభ్యాసం చేయించాలి.
